Mr. Simon Murphy- Primary Principal

Welcome to Al Bateen Academy. My name is Simon Murphy and I am delighted to be Primary Principal of such a vibrant and family orientated learning community.

Originally from the UK, I have significant school leadership experience both at home and within the UAE. Most recently, this has included leading a whole school change project alongside Harvard University’s Project Zero department.

Al Bateen is a nurturing environment for our students, where they enjoy their learning and feel comfortable. Nothing gives me more satisfaction, than seeing our students arrive to school, bright eyed, enthused and eager to learn. My passion within education is to put the choices & decisions for learning into the hands of our students. Empowering them to inquire and make choices on what interests them. As a result of this, I am a firm advocate for the world leading International Baccalaureate PYP curriculum that we offer our students. Through its blended approach to learning and key learner profile attributes we will inspire students to become risk takers who are open-minded, principled and reflective.

Mr. Peter Atkins

My role as Head of Senior School at Al Bateen is to oversee both the pastoral and academic well-being of the senior school students. A key goal is to ensure that our AS & IB students at Al Bateen are successful whilst here, alongside developing the skills and competencies needed to succeed in life after senior school, whether it be further study at university or future employment. I have previously worked at international schools in both the UK and Italy, teaching economics on the IB Diploma Programme as well as holding the post of IB DP Coordinator as part of the school leadership team. I completed my Masters degree in International Education at the University of Bath, following which I am now working towards completing a Doctorate in Education. I have an interest in exploring collaborative working practices to aid student outcomes. Al Bateen Academy is an international community of staff, students and parents that both appreciate diversity whilst at the same time are sensitive to cultural values, these attributes help to shape our students into well informed global citizens, something I am very proud to now be part of. I look forward to working closely with the senior school students this year to help motivate them to be the best they can possible be and encourage them to take advantage of the wide range of opportunities.

Ms. Rachel Smyth

Having taught for over 20 years in a variety of schools in the UK, Botswana, China and the Gulf region, I have no hesitation in describing Al Bateen Academy as a very special place. A vibrant, innovative and inclusive school community, based upon high expectations and mutual support, care and respect. As the Assistant Principal (Pastoral), my role is focused upon developing and monitoring effective pastoral systems; student well-being, behaviour, attendance and student personal development. I have a strong commitment to student-centred approaches, student leadership and student voice, which I am researching as part of my doctoral studies. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work at Al Bateen Academy over the last seven years as we continue to nurture and equip our students to become confident, resilient, internationally-minded citizens of the future.

Mr. Matthew Smith

I completed the first 8 years of my teaching career in Mansfield, England, specialising in delivering History and Geography at KS3,4 and 5, while also taking a keen interest in pastoral care as Head of Year 9. I joined Al Bateen Academy in the summer of 2014 as Head of Year 8, before becoming Head of Year 7 and Transition coordinator. In 2017 I took on a role in the schools extended leadership team before being appointed Head of Lower School. I have completed Penta school inspection training and in April 2019 I was appointed as Assistant Principal with responsibility for Teaching, Learning and CPD. I currently line manage the MOE subjects at Al Bateen Academy as well as ICT and teaching staff in leadership roles. My passions in school, are broad, ranging from teaching and learning through to pastoral care. In my role I am looking to develop evidence based teaching and learning strategies which support students in order for them to excel.

Mrs. Sarah Saliba

During the past seventeen years I have been in Education, I have previously taught, supported and led various educational programmes in Canada, Lebanon and the UAE; where I have resided since 2006. My role as the Primary Years Programme Coordinator and Primary Lead at Al Bateen Academy is to ensure the PYP offers an inquiry-based approach that supports children’s learning through play in the early years and facilities guided inquiry throughout all primary. The programme aligns to the International Baccalaureate and Al Bateen Academy’s vision, mission and aims to develop children’s essential skills needed to grow as twenty first century learners. I am extremely excited to be a part of the founding Primary team and to lead the continued development of the primary whilst supporting the children in reaching their full potential in all areas of the Primary Years Programme at Al Bateen Academy.

Mrs. Tagreed Saffour
